Hello Everyone,
My name is Mary Jo Swiger and I currently teach 5th
grade at Fairview Middle School. My
friends and colleagues call me Mary Jo, but my family prefers “Mare”. My son once told a story in his 2nd
grade classroom and referred to me as “Mare”.
His teacher was appalled that he would refer to me as a “horse”…ha ha! We had some explaining to do that day! I’ve been married to my husband, Cliff for 20
years and we have one son, Austin.
Austin is 17 years old and a senior at North Marion High School. He is an avid golfer and decided to play basketball this year. We have one adopted cat and his name is Iven. Our home is situated approximately four miles
from Fairview Middle School. Besides
teaching 5th grade RLA, Science and Technology, I’m the Professional
Development School Coordinator at Fairview Middle. This position provides numerous opportunities
to be involved with FSU students and liaisons. In addition, participating and
developing professional development opportunities for the partnership is an
exciting, and ongoing learning process.
The Digital Media Program has been my personal “Giving Tree”. If you have read Shel Silverstein’s book, The
Giving Tree, then you will understand the enormous opportunities given to me as
result of being enrolled in this program.
My favorite technology tool right now..hmm..this is tough since I’m a
gadget lover! I suppose my choice would
be the ability to choose apps for my iphone/ipad for any purpose, from
educational apps to personal apps. Honestly,
I get motivated when my friends and I get together and “share apps”. So, if you see me huddled in a corner with
friends, feel free to join the app sharing party. I’ve been looking forward to this class, and
can’t wait to collaborate with everyone.
Mary Jo - "Mare" remind me of the Mary Tyler Moore show, Mary's best friend, Rhoda, always called her Mare. I am excited to have you in this class and hope you'll share your wealth of expertise and ideas about using technology in teaching with us. Maybe someone could post an "Apps" topic for recommended apps? I would love to know what people are using. I am also looking forward to our more regular postings and hearing the teacher leaders in the class (you are definitely on that list) reflect on their development, opportunities, and successes!
