Module 2-Leadership

When I first read this assignment and thought about the articles, the leader that came to mind as effective, influential, and inspiring was my former pastor, Larry Kincell.  He didn’t do anything with technology, but he was a great person who had good leadership traits.  The greatest change he led was when he stepped down from being our pastor.  I know it sounds ironic, but he gave us a year and encouraged us, as a congregations, to continue our search for a new pastor even though he was still there.  Some of his leadership traits include the following: Being proactive in seeking situations beneficial for individuals, planning visions for the church and helping the church reach them, and helping people of the church realize they are all important and should be involved with anything they fell led to do.

Self- leadership assessment results:

1.       How Good Are Your Leadership Skills?

a.       My score was 64.  My biggest leadership trait is emotional intelligence.  I can see this play out in my workplace.  I am actually a weekend manager and when it comes to getting things done, I do have high expectations.  I also do consider others concerns and problems.  I feel that an effective team is only effective is everyone is on board.  But if someone is hurting, then then whole team takes the chance of getting hurt or not performing as well.  I realize that might sound a little cliché, but it seems to have helped me mature as a manager and as a person.  I have learned a lot from managing a restaurant, and I can take what I have learned into the teaching environment.

2.       Collaborative Assessment

a.       Assessing the environment-38

b.      Creating Clarity-49

c.       Building Trust-45

d.      Sharing Power and Influence-56

e.      Developing People-56

f.        Self-Reflection-54

Some of my greatest skills are: listening to others, creating a positive environment, and ensuring trust.   Some items I need to work on include: being more assertive when assigning tasks, using self-assessment tools, and developing strategic plans.  A lot of times I just take action without thinking.  This has both benefited and hurt me in terms of the outcome.  I need to try to think more often rather proceed with the first thing that comes to mind.

I aspire to be the transformational leader.  I want to encourage people to “reach for the future” and build on their strengths.  People need to realize that they have the ability to change situations around themselves.  They can cause greater outcomes for circumstances.
